The Medford (Ore.) Police Department won the lottery Wednesday, after an appellate court awarded the agency a $1 million scratcher illegally purchased by a woman in 2005 in an asset forfeiture case.

The Medford (Ore.) Police Department won the lottery Wednesday, after an appellate court awarded the agency a $1 million scratcher illegally purchased by a woman in 2005.

The agency won its court battle with Christina Elizabeth Goodenow, 45, who argued that it was excessive punishment to strip her of the $1 million in winnings, reports the Mail Tribune.

Goodenow had purchased the winning ticket on Oct. 9, 2005 at Fair City Market in Central Point with the stolen credit card of her boyfriend's deceased mother. Goodenow racked up $12,000 in charges on the card.
