Nearly four years after the U.S. Department of Justice accused Dayton of systematically discriminating against blacks in the hiring of police officers, 24 police recruits entered the city's Police Academy on Sunday, reports the Dayton Daily News.

The class includes four black males, one Latino male, one Asian-Pacific male, and three women.

Dayton has struggled to hire in recent years as it developed processes that would lead to hiring a more diverse group of recruits. "It's long overdue," Chief Richard Biehl said Friday of the new class.

The city made changes to the scoring of its civil-service exam to deepen the minority hiring pool.
