Dep. Scott Sloan, 31, was responding to a 911 call from a child that a stranger was in his home when he struck a Jeep driven by Barry Johnson, 65, on U.S. 30. Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, reports the Idaho Statesman.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave after the crash, and later left the department.
