Memphis (Tenn.) Police Officer Josh Shearer's protective vest likely saved his life, when it absorbed a handgun round from a suspect during a chase in the Raleigh neighborhood.

The 30-year-old Shearer, who has been on the force for one year, was shot Wednesday during an exchange of gunfire with Edward Sample, 19. The officer was hit in the upper right chest—an area covered by the vest, reports the Commercial Appeal.

The incident began, after Sample and another man allegedly car-jacked a Chevy Impala. Police later spotted the vehicle into a wooded area, when Sample fired at the officers, reports WMC-TV.
