A Hawkins County (Tenn.) Sheriff's deputy shot a man who lunged at him with a short-bladed sword, after the deputy repeatedly asked him to drop the weapon.

Brandon Lee Laferty, 26, was transported to an area hospital, where he immediately underwent surgery for a single gunshot wound to his chest. The deputy also attempted to pepper-spray Laferty.

Deputies were dispatched to 298 Dykes Road in Church Hill to serve a Sullivan County violation of probation warrant that stemmed from a conviction for solicitation of aggravated sexual battery, reports the News Sentinel.
