A former Los Angeles police officer working in Spokane, Wash., was convicted by a federal jury Wednesday of using excessive force in the beating of a mentally ill man who died after being struck with batons, hogtied, shocked and smothered.

The officer, Karl F. Thompson Jr., was convicted of civil rights violations and obstruction charges stemming from what federal authorities called an "extensive cover-up" within the Spokane Police Department after the 2006 incident., reports the Los Angeles Times.
