The Miami Police Department's policies, training and deployment practices will be scrutinized in a federal rights probe announced by the U.S. Justice Department today.

Acting Chief Manuel Orosa has cut the size of tactical units responsible for at least four of the seven fatal shootings of black men now under investigation, reports the Miami Herald.

The civil rights investigation will focus on allegations of excessive use of deadly force by Miami officers to determine if there are "systematic violations," according to a Justice Department release.

The Justice Department has launched similar probes of the Newark (N.J.) Police Department, Seattle Police Department, New Orleans Police Department, and the Portland Police Bureau.
