Ala. Deputy Recovering from Gun Battle

A Madison County (Ala.) Sheriff's deputy is now recovering from injuries he sustained when a robbery suspect fired at him with an AK-47 rifle.

A Madison County (Ala.) Sheriff's deputy is now recovering from injuries he sustained when a robbery suspect fired at him with an AK-47 rifle.

The incident began in Huntsville, Ala., when Deputy Brent Beavers spotted a vehicle that matched the description from an 11:30 p.m. robbery, where the suspect walked into the Super Stop, fired an assault rifle into the Plexiglass, and fled with cash, reports the Huntsville Times.

After Deputy Beavers pulled over his vehicle, 23-year-old Joseph Scott Shriver allegedly got out of his car, kneeled and fired an AK-47 rifle 12 to 15 times at the deputy's car. Beavers was shot in the face, but was able to reverse his vehicle, and give dispatchers a good description of the vehicle.

The other officer on the scene, Sgt. Johnny Simmons, returned fire and Shriver got back into the car and left. He was taken into custody later.
