Honolulu (Hawaii) Police Officer Sylvia Dawson's retirement brings an end to the era of matrons who carried badges but no guns for the agency.
Officer Dawson, who was hired in her 20s, charge of the cell block, feeding prisoners and handling arrested females and juveniles. The department began hiring female officers as matrons in 1910, reports KITV.
Officer Dawson, who spent most of her career working the midnight watch, was the first to bring the breathalyzer to the department.
