A Schenectady (N.Y.) Police recruit has been terminated a day after being sworn, after it was determined his bachelor's degree had come from a non-accredited online degree program.

John Laviano is a 2010 graduate of Ashwood University, which advertises itself on its Web site as an "accredited online university." However, Laviano's degree does not meet the agency's educational standards, says Chief Mark Chaires.

Apparently, civil screeners overlooked this on his application during the background check.

On the Ashwood University Web site, the online program offers "accredited online life experiance degrees for what you already know" and promises potential students that they "do not need to study, attend classes or give exams."

Ashwood promises to provide an accredited degree "for as low as $349" and will send it to the student within 15 days of ordering.
