Vermont Sheriff Named To Late Wife's Job

Sgt. Ray Allen took over as sheriff of Grand Isle County, Vt., on Wednesday with mixed emotions — grateful for the opportunity, yet sad to replace the prior sheriff. Sheriff Allen has taken over a job left open when the former sheriff, and his wife, took her own life earlier this summer.

Sheriff Allen was picked to head the Grand Isle County Sheriff's Department that covers a jurisdiction of 7,000 residents. He had worked side-by-side with wife Connie Allen for 19 years. As sheriff, Connie Allen was one of Vermont's first and only elected sheriffs.
