The Los Angeles Police Department honored the legacy of its first female officer killed in the line of duty on Sunday by presenting a new recruit with an award in honor of the fallen officer.

Upon graduation, 27-year-old Erin Sandwick was honored with an award named for Officer Tina Kerbrat, who was fatally shot 20 years ago in North Hollywood.

Officer Kerbrat and her partner pulled over a man they recognized as a possible criminal on Feb. 11, 1991. The officers stopped the suspect on his way to shoot employees of a bar. He fatally shot Officer Kerbrat, who had been on the force for only 10 months.

The Kerbrat Award is given to the recruit deemed the "most inspirational," CBS News reports.
