An Allegheny County (Pa.) Police detective who had saved a teenage girl's life committed suicide after a four-hour standoff with police.

Homicide detective Lawrence Carpico, 49, died at 10:17 p.m. Saturday. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

In 2007, he scared off a teenage boy who was attacking his ex-girlfriend with a hammer near the Port Authority Light Rail Transit lines. The boy then threw himself in front of a train.
