The American Civil Liberties Union's northern California chapter and other groups have sued the federal government to halt the shackling of illegal immigrants during court hearings.

The American Civil Liberties Union's northern California chapter and other groups have sued the federal government to halt the shackling of illegal immigrants during court hearings.

The groups claim detainees are routinely forced to wear wrist shackles, belly chains, and leg irons even if they don't pose a flight risk.

The groups are suing the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
