The Rapid City (S.D.) Police officer who survived a deadly shooting that claimed two fellow cops has returned to duty.

Officer Tim Doyle was seriously wounded in the Aug. 2 gun battle that claimed the lives of officers J. Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong. Officer Doyle was shot in the temple; the bullet was sent along his jaw line and lodged in his chest, where it remains.

The wire holding together Doyle's mouth is expected to come off Sept. 12, and his health improves some each day even if it is a bit challenging to eat. The hardest part of his recovery process seems to be over -- a tracheotomy tube and drainage into his lungs prevented him from sleeping much in the hospital.
