Los Angeles Police are warning jewelry sellers and those who wear gold to avoid flashy displays to avoid having heirlooms and baubles snatched off fingers, necks and wrists.
Cmdr. Jim Cansler of Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Division is also urging merchants to be more aware of who's entering their stores.
Gold prices have reached an all-time high and are fueling a crime spree in the precious metal. Police nationwide are seeing an uptick in robberies and burglaries related to gold prices, which peaked at $1,891 an ounce last month, up more than $600 from a year earlier, reports the Daily News.
On Wednesday, Woburn (Mass.) Police Officer Robert DeNapoli, 51, was shot during a morning robbery at Musto Jewelers. He was the second Woburn PD officer shot responding to a jewelry heist in less than year.
