A sharply divided Miami City Commission voted 3-2 Monday to fire Police Chief Miguel Exposito, who has been at odds with Mayor Tomas Regalado for a year.
Commissioners upheld a decision by City Manager Johnny Martinez, who suspended Exposito last week for insubordination. The decision ended more than three days of debate over the chief's future.
Martinez charged Exposito with ignoring direction to come up with a plan to reduce overtime spending — a reason commissioners rejected — and with circumventing an order not to demote three high-ranking police officers by stripping them of their duties anyway. A majority of commissioners said that move by the chief constituted disobeying the manager, reports the Miami Herald.
