A Detroit man set to go on trial for first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Livonia police officer pleaded no contest this morning to second-degree murder, sparing himself a prison term of life without parole.

Terry Bowling, 49, stood quietly in court before Oakland County Circuit court judge Michael Warren, and answered "yes" when Warren asked him whether he understood the terms of the plea deal. Bowling faces up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 19.
