The McAllen (Texas) Police continue to investigate the possible involvement of a Mexican drug cartel in fatal overnight shooting earlier this week.

Jorge Zavala, 32, was fatally shot at about 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of Expressway 83. Chief Victor Rodriguez said he would not comment on whether the case had any connections with Mexican organized crime, reports The Monitor.

Zavala was believed to have ties with Gulf Cartel members in Reynosa and Matamoros, three sources familiar with the situation said. The cartel has shown signs of its own internal power struggle in recent weeks, with widespread grenade attacks in the cities that line Tamaulipas' northern border and the assassination of one of its high-ranking leaders.
