A Schenectady (N.Y.) Police officer shot a knife-wielding man in the lobby of an upstate New York newspaper Saturday afternoon in an apparent suicide-by-cop encounter.
Elvis Norwood, 21, entered the offices of The Daily Gazette at about 4 p.m. appearing drowsy, medicated and "very vacant-looking." During a brief conversation with Norwood, the newspaper's general manager and his girlfriend noticed a shiny object and called 911.
Schenectady Police Officers Timothy Rizzo and Brett Ferris arrived and attempted to convince the man to drop a steak knife with a nine-inch blade. When the man lunged at the officers, Officer Ferris fired four shots from his .40-caliber service weapon, striking Norwood three times — in the arm, chest and stomach. Norwood is expected to survive.
