The 22-year-old man who charged Columbia (S.C.) Police officers with an AK-47 was carrying homemade explosives when tactical officers fatally shot him at a rental property after an hour-long standoff.
Blakely Hilton Jernigan had built high-powered firecrackers. Investigators also found more weapons, cocaine and marijuana in his apartment following the incident, which began when Jernigan shot an officer at a traffic stop.
Jernigan shot Officer Alexander Broder in the chest at close range after he pulled over Jernigan's car. The officer survived because he was wearing a ballistic vest.
