Alabama Joins Federal Fingerprint Database

The Alabama Department of Public Safety began participating in the Secure Communities system maintained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Alabama became the last southern state to join a federal fingerprint database to help locate and potentially deport illegal immigrants with criminal records.

The Alabama Department of Public Safety began participating in the Secure Communities system maintained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The agency began participating in late April.

The system allows county jailers to share the fingerprints of people booked into jail with ICE and other federal agencies. If the agencies find a match of someone without legal status and a history of crime, especially violence, they'll be targeted for deportation.
