A private consultant has recommended downsizing or eliminating the Bergen County (N.J.) Police Department in a report financed with asset forfeiture funds.

New York-based Guidepost Solutions LLC, which conducted the study, proposed three general directions the county could take to eliminate redundancy and save money.

Those three options include a "reduction in force" for the county police department, downsizing the department and transferring some of its personnel and duties to the county Sheriff's Office, and eliminating the department and transferring its powers and duties to the sheriff.
