A Fond du Lac Police officer has resigned after an internal investigation revealed he had a past relationship with the girlfriend of the man who shot an officer on March 20.

Officer Jay Salzmann resigned May 1, citing personal reasons.

Salzmann's "past relationship" was allegedly with Josephine Warner, former girlfriend of James Cruckson, who opened fire on Fond du Lac PD officers who arrived at his home at 24 S. Lincoln Ave. to investigate a sexual assault complaint filed by Warner and to check on the welfare of Warner's child.
