Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents traveling in Mexico were shot Tuesday in an apparent assault near the northern Mexico city of San Luis Potosi, reports the Houston Chronicle.

The agents were travelling in a sports-utility vehicle, when gangsters in other vehicles stopped them. The agents were apparently identifying themselves when they were fired upon.

The names of the agents were not immediately divulged until their families could be notified.

Tuesday's attack is the first killing of a U.S. agent in the line of duty in Mexico since the 1985 torture murder of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena by drug traffickers in Guadalajara.
