Slain U.S. Marshal Identified

Deputy U.S. Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller, who had served in the U.S. Marshals Service for more than a year, sustained a fatal wound to the neck.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller, 24, of Bridgeport, died at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown from a fatal gunshot wound, reports the Charleston Daily Mail.

Hotsinpiller was killed when suspect Charles Smith, 50, opened fire on a group of three marshals and West Virginia state troopers serving a warrant for failure to appear on drug and firearms charges.

Hotsinpiller, who had served in the U.S. Marshals Service for more than a year, sustained a fatal wound to the neck.
