Dallas Police Hire Social Media Officer

Sr. Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez has been distributing crime alerts, requests for public assistance to locate missing persons, surveillance video and departmental commendations via Facebook, Twitter, Nixle and YouTube.

The Dallas Police Department has created a position of a social media officer, assigning one of its patrol officers to the role, MyFoxDallas reports.

Sr. Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez has been distributing crime alerts, requests for public assistance to locate missing persons, surveillance video and departmental commendations via Facebook, Twitter, Nixle and YouTube.

On Feb. 23, the agency posted the 19-minute patrol-car video showing the arrest by Dallas Police Officer Quaitemes Williams of Rodarick Lyles on Jan. 27. Officer Williams was later fired for kicking the handcuffed Williams in the face and then pepper-spraying him.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown has also joined Twitter.
