Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck announced his support for federal legislation that would ban weapon magazines carrying more than 10 rounds, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Chief Beck and other top officials cited Jared Loughner's attempt to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) as reason for their support of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy's (D-N.Y.) H.R. 308.

"It boils down to simple math: It's 20 lives," as the newspaper quotes Beck, describing the difference between a 10- and 30-round magazine.
