A New York State Police rabbi's employment status with a municipality has come under scrutiny by the Times Union newspaper, who published a report questioning his use of official license plates.

The rabbi, Bernard Freilich of Brooklyn, serves as a police chaplain, carries a badge, presents himself as an officer, and earns $100,000, according to the report.

Freilich has equipped his private vehicle for years with "official" license plates registered to an Orange County village, Kiryas Joel,  where he is not employed.
