A Los Angeles Police officer was shot and critically wounded early Monday morning, while responding to a domestic violence call in the San Fernando Valley.

Officer Steve Jenkins, a K-9 officer, was shot twice at about 2:45 a.m. while he was inside a home in the 13600 block of Dronfield Ave. in Sylmar, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The incident began Sunday evening, when the wife of Sergio O. Salazar fled to a nearby residence to call police after allegedly being injured by Salazar. The wife was treated for moderate injuries and placed in protective custody.

The LAPD's SWAT unit used tear gas and "hot gas," and later exchanged gunfire with Salazar. The LAPD brought forklift-type equipment, and began tearing down parts of the two-story house. Salazar was found dead in the home Monday night, when officers entered the building.

Officer Jenkins, whose wife is an LAPD sergeant, was hit twice. The first round struck the right side of his face and exited near his jaw, while the second entered near his right clavicle, fracturing several ribs and damaging a lung.
