The Los Angeles Police Department decided to give drivers a break if they're caught at DUI checkpoints without a license by releasing the vehicle to a family member or friend if they can get to the scene quickly.

In the past, the agency has impounded the vehicle for 30 days. The change in policy was met with a class action grievance filed by the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which represents officers, reports the Los Angeles Weekly.
