The Maine State Police have 27 openings for troopers and expect 40 more to retire in 2011, which will leave the agency with the most openings in more than 20 years, reports MPBN.net.

The agency is authorized for 326 positions and now has 299 troopers.

Colonel Patrick Fleming says state law forbids him from hiring a trooper until a vacancy is created. It takes the agency about a year to hire and train a trooper.
