The Aurora (Ill.) PD has promoted Kristen Ziman as one of three commanders reporting directly to the chief. She becomes the first female to rise to that role, reports the Chicago Daily Herald.

Ziman, 37, joined the Aurora PD in 1991, rising through the ranks to an investigator position with the Domestic Violence Reduction Unit, and then to sergeant, lieutenant and commander.

"She was born to be a police officer," Aurora patrol officer Christine Tunney told the Daily Herald. "Moving up to her has just been an opportunity to make everything better for the rest of us. And it's got nothing to do with gender."
