Dallas Officer Wounded by Reportedly Suicidal Shooter

A witness to a shootout that left a Dallas police officer wounded and the gunman dead Sunday night at a Pleasant Grove apartment complex says he thinks the gunman wanted to die.

A witness to a shootout that left a Dallas police officer wounded and the gunman dead Sunday night at a Pleasant Grove apartment complex says he thinks the gunman wanted to die.

Anthony Mitchell said he heard gunshots around 9 p.m., went outside and saw a man shooting a handgun. The man fired shots, then ran to hide, he said. But when police arrived, the man came back out and began firing at them with what appeared to be a machine gun.

"I think he really wanted to die," Mitchell said. "He could have gotten away, but he came back out when the officers got there."
