Newark PD Loses 167 Officers To Layoffs

The department's total staffing will fall to 1,098 and prompt the dismissal of nearly every police officer hired since 2006.

After months of bargaining between Newark (N.J.) Police union officials and Mayor Cory Booker's administration, 167 officers turned in their guns and badges in what will be the largest workforce reduction in 32 years, reports the The Star-Ledger.

The layoffs are projected to save $9.5 million in annual expense, part of the Booker administration's effort to close a $83 million hole in the 2011 city budget.
