U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, 40, was likely killed by bandits who rob and sexually assault immigrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, reports the New York Times.

Terry, who had been a border agent since leaving the Detroit PD in 2007, was attacked Tuesday evening in a mountainous region known for smuggling of drugs, humans and other contraband, near Rio Rico, according to Reuters.

The area is a few miles northwest of Nogales, Ariz. Four suspects have been arrested and federal authories are searching for a fifth.
