Woburn (Mass.) PD's Officer John Maguire had submitted his retirement paperwork when he was fatally shot while responding to an armed robbery at the Kohl's department store late Sunday, reports the Boston Globe.
Starting Jan. 1, Maguire was scheduled to leave the busy night shift and retire in about a year.
Woburn Chief Philip Mahoney said telling Maguire's wife of 23 years that her husband had been fatally shot was "one of the saddest duties I ever had to do," he told the Globe. "I can't tell you how traumatic that was.''
