During its review of the loss of an officer in a friendly fire incident, the Baltimore Police Department is now requiring its officers to wear uniforms or clothing that identifies them as officers, reports the Baltimore Sun.
Command staff members are now discussing new rules governing plainclothes work. Officers could wear distinctive colors that change by the day or week, to make them quickly identifiable to fellow officers but not to the people they are trying to arrest, or use code words.
The NYPD uses a "color of the day" to mark plainclothes officers that can be seen via a bandana or headband.
