Half of the guns used in out-of-state crimes can be traced to 10 states, according to a new report from a coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other mayors are mounting a campaign against states they say have "lax gun laws" and are attempting to push for additional gun-control legislation in those states, the New York Times reports.

The report concludes that the 10 worst offenders per capita, led by Mississippi, West Virginia and Kentucky, supplied nearly half the 43,000 guns traced to crime scenes in other states last year.

The mayors will use the study to push for state and federal laws that would close the so-called gun-show loophole that allows attendees to purchase guns without goign through background checks.
