Detroit police officials are pointing to an eventful Thursday night—during which officers confiscated several illegal guns and a carjacking suspect—as proof that its revamped approach to targeting crime hot spots is paying off.

The department’s Mobile Strike Force hit the 6th Precinct, where data analysis highlighted a rash of armed and unarmed robberies, according to a news release today.

By the shift’s end, the force’s Gang Enforcement Unit had confiscated five guns and made several felony arrests, police said.

“By evaluating crime data twice daily, we are becoming much more effective at being where the problems are before they get too out of hand,” Chief Warren Evans said. “It is a more efficient and effective use of our limited resources.”
