Houston Mayor Targets Police Overtime Pay

The president of the Houston Police Officer's Union said the pay is needed to compensate officers for working overnight and making it to court in the morning.

To help shave a projected $100 million budget deficit, Houston Mayor Annise Parker says police and fire overtime pay should be considered, the Houston Chronicle reports.

In 2009, the city paid $50 million in overtime pay to the Houston Police Department, which now maintains a 5,400-officer force that covers 600 square miles. The top-earning officer pulled in $127,014 in overtime pay working vehicular enforcement, the newspaper reports.
