Kansas City Police Officer Jason Findley received the Medal of Honor from his police chief today for his bravery in the fall, when he helped get motorists away from an accident scene involving toxic chemicals while off duty, the Kansas City Star reports.

Findley was heading home after working an overnight shift, when he came across the tanker truck accident. After noticing a vapor cloud, Findley got out of his car in street clothes and began directing traffic away from the wreck.

He was later treated for respiratory damage from the fumes.
