Times Square Evacuated After Police Find 'Amateurish' Bomb In SUV

The NYPD's bomb squad, wearing protective gear, broke into the vehicle and discovered an "amateurish" explosive device that had malfunctioned.

Thousands of tourists and theater goers were evacuated from Times Square on Saturday evening, when the NYPD discovered an exposive device inside a Nissan Pathfinder SUV that was in the process of detonating, the New York Times reports.

A t-shirt vendor saw smoke coming out of the vehicle and told an officer. A surveillance camera had recorded footage of the vehicle moving through Time Square moments beforehand.

The NYPD's bomb squad, wearing protective gear, broke into the vehicle and discovered an "amateurish" explosive device that had malfunctioned.

The vehicle's license plate did not match the Pathfinder. Instead, it was registered to a Ford that had arrived at a junkyard in Connecticut.
