Robbery Suspect Takes Infant Hostage, Barricades Against Sacramento SWAT

An armed robbery suspect who is holding a 16-month-old boy hostage in an Arden Way apartment is being "uncooperative," a Sacramento sheriff's spokesman said at noon today.

An armed robbery suspect who is holding a 16-month-old boy hostage in an Arden Way apartment is being "uncooperative," a Sacramento sheriff's spokesman said at noon today.

Anthony Alvarez, 26, has become "uncooperative" with officers who are trying to get him to give up and free the boy, the son of the suspect's cousin, said Sgt. Tim Curran.

Alvarez, who a relative said the suspect is both schizophrenic and bipolar and has not been taking his medications, has several times led negotiators to believe they were making progress in ending the standoff, only to pull back.

Earlier today, deputies determined that Alvarez is not wounded after all, Curran said.

Sometime before 10 a.m., deputies got a good look at Anthony Alvarez, 26, and he appeared unhurt, Curran said.
