Sacramento County Sheriff's SWAT team members ended a standoff with a San Francisco man who held a 16-month infant hostage for nearly three days, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

On Friday at 7 p.m., the tactical team used explosives to open a side wall of the apartment where 26-year-old Anthony Alvarez was holding his cousin's son. Officers then used improved sight lines to shoot Alvarez and safely rescue the infant.

"I looked the baby right in the eyes and he looked to be in great shape," [Sgt. Tim] Curran said. "There's a tremendous sense of relief. We were elated. To see that little baby I know that I got choked up and tears came to my eyes."
