Karla Christiansen joined the Michigan State Police force in 1976 and felt like "an invader," as the first female officer to go out on patrol, she told the Chicago Tribune, as she retired after a 33-year law enforcement career.

Christiansen said it was an adjustment to dress in the post's boiler room and earn the respect of male troopers. She eventually won most of them over, she said.
