The upbeat music of an electric guitar rolled softly through the parking lots of Champions Centre on Tacoma’s East Side on Sunday evening as some 700 people gathered in prayer and somber thanksgiving.
The vigil was quickly arranged by leaders of the 6,000-strong nondenominational and charismatic church after they learned that four Lakewood police officers had been shot and killed Sunday morning.
Gathered outside the entrance of the church, strangers and members of the congregation alike embraced, comforted one another and held candles distributed by ushers.
Multiple law enforcement agencies—local and federal—reportedly responded to the incident, and Aurora Police now say five officers were shot and wounded in the incident that left five workers at the business and the gunman dead. The injured officers are reportedly stable.
