Deputy Cpl. J.R. Searcy has died as a result of the gunshot wound to the head he sustained during a Thursday gunfight, the Ouachita Parish (La.) Sheriff's Office has announced.
Searcy, 33, was in critical condition for two days.
The eight-year deputy had responded to an aggravated assault call with his partner Thursday evening, when they stopped Michael Tanner, who was suspected of trying to run people over with a vehicle.
The deputies had asked Tanner to place his hands on his head, and J.R. Searcy had drawn his TASER. Tanner drew a handgun from his waistband and shot the deputy. Searcy's partner then shot the suspect.
Searcy had worked patrol, K-9 and was a patrol training officer at the time of the shooting.
