Charlotte City Council members voted Monday night for City Manager Curt Walton's plan to hire 125 additional police officers. Fifty will be hired with $8.5 million in federal stimulus dollars, and will start in September.
The other 75 will be hired in part with $4.5 million originally slated for street resurfacing.
The New York Police Benevolent Association said on Facebook, "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our brother, P.O. Brian Kessler, who was killed in a vehicle collision on his way home from work this morning. He was just 28 years old and had less than nine months on the job."
