NYPD Officers Shot at Traffic Stop: One in Grave Condition

Officer Russel Timoshenko, 23, was shot twice in the face. He is in grave condition. Officer Herman Yan, 26, was shot in the chest, but his vest stopped the bullet. He was also shot in the forearm.

Two of New York’s finest were shot this morning while making a traffic stop in Brooklyn.

Officer Russel Timoshenko, 23, was shot twice in the face. He is in grave condition. Officer Herman Yan, 26, was shot in the chest, but his vest stopped the bullet. He was also shot in the forearm.

“One will recover and the other is clinging to life,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference.

At least two suspects are being sought in relation to the shooting. The NYPD has recovered three guns a 9mm pistol, a .45 pistol, and a Tec-9 machine pistol. They also say that they have the in-car video from the patrol vehicle and that it shows the shooting.

Police say the two officers pulled over a BMW SUV at 2:30 a.m. Monday in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn. They stopped the SUV because they suspected that it was stolen when they ran the plate and discovered that it didn’t match the vehicle.

The officers both approached the vehicle, one on the left and one on the right, when they were fired upon. Timoshenko was hit, and Yan was hit when he came to his partner’s aid. The BMW then sped away.
